The FACT Act
Your right to a free credit report

Don't be fooled by websites offering free credit reports.  Every site, except one, is a gimmick for ongoing monthly charges.  The truly free site is www.annualcreditreport.com, which was created in response to the signing of the FACT Act. On December 4, 2003, the President signed the Fair and Accurate Credit Transaction Act. This law put into effect that all citizens be treated equally when applying for a loan, mortgage, or any other form of credit.  It doesn't matter if you have bad credit or low income, you will have a fair chance at improving your credit.
Debt consolidation
The main part of the Act allows every consumer to receive one free copy of their credit report each year.  Note this is your report, listing each outstanding item in your credit history, but it is not your credi score. Find your free credit report at www.annualcreditreport.com.  Using this to your advantage can prevent you from experiencing identity theft and allows you review of your credit habits.  By providing information such as your name, birthday, social security number, and address, they will give you a copy almost instantly online. Prior to 1995, your credit report was not even available to you individually, and from 1995-2003 the only way you could receive it was to pay.  The ulimate goal behind this Act is to protect consumers by making their official credit history available once per year.
